Gaza fisherman shot by Egyptian boats

Published yesterday (updated) 28/05/2014 23:03

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian fisherman was shot by Egyptian boats in the sea near Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

Spokesman for the Gaza ministry of health Ashraf al-Qidra told Ma'an that a fisherman was shot in the face by Egyptian boats off the coast of Rafah.

Al-Qidra said that the victim was 16 years old but did not identify him by name.

He was taken to the European Gaza Hospital with moderate to serious injuries, al-Qidra added.

Although Israeli soldiers enforcing a 7-year-old blockade on the Gaza Strip frequently fire at Palestinian fishermen who stray too far from the coast, Egyptian forces -- who also enforce the siege, at Israel's request -- do so much more rarely.

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli naval forces early Wednesday fired at fishermen off the coast of the southern Gaza Strip before detaining two of them, a union official said.

Nizar Ayyash, head of the Gaza fishermen's union, said Ramiz Jumaa and Imad Mansour were detained by the Israeli navy off the coast of Rafah.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said a Palestinian "vessel deviated from its designated fishing zone."

Navy soldiers called on the fishermen to return to the zone, and "fired warning shots in the air."

"When that didn't help, two suspects were taken in for questioning," the spokeswoman said.

Israel has controlled Gaza waters since its occupation of the area in 1967, and has kept several warships stationed off the coast since 2008.

Israeli forces injure Palestinian fisherman in north Gaza

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian man was shot and injured by Israeli forces while he was fishing on the coast of the Gaza Strip on Saturday, medics said.

Medics in the besieged coastal enclave told Ma'an that the fisherman was in the area of al-Sudaniya in the northern Gaza Strip when he was shot.

They added that he was shot in the leg by Israeli forces stationed at the Gaza Strip's northern border, and that the victim was subsequently transferred to the Shifa Hospital.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said that "two Palestinians approached the security fence, and the soldiers operated in order to distance them."

When they refused to comply, she added, the soldiers "opened fired towards the lower extremities of one of them."

She said that the two were about 50 meters from the border at the time of the shooting.

Israeli forces frequently shoot at Palestinians if they approach large swathes of land near the border that the Israeli military has deemed a "security buffer zone," and thus off-limits to Palestinians.

According to UNOCHA, 17 percent of Gaza's total land area and 35 percent of its agricultural land were within the buffer zone as of 2010, directly affecting the lives and livelihoods of more than 100,000 Gazans.

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Egyptian navy detained three Palestinian fishermen off the coast of the southern Gaza Strip early Tuesday, a union official said.

Nizar Ayyash, spokesperson for the Gaza fishermen's union, told Ma'an that Egyptian naval squadrons obstructed a fishing boat off the coast of Rafah.

The navy then took Amir Jamal al-Aqraa and his two brothers Muhammad and Fahd into custody, Ayyash said, without providing further details.

Gaza fishermen face severe restrictions imposed by both Israel and Egypt, whose navies often fire on fishing boats that stray outside small "designated fishing zones."

In August, Egyptian forces fired at Gaza fishermen, injuring two men and arresting six others.

Egypt-Gaza relations have deteriorated in the wake of the military ouster of former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in July.

There are some 4,000 fishermen in Gaza. According to a 2011 report by the International Committee of the Red Cross, 90 percent are poor, a 40 percent increase from 2008 resulting from Israeli limits on the fishing industry.

Israeli gunboats open fire at Palestinian fishing boats

[ 04/05/2014 - 06:59 AM ]

GAZA, (PIC)-- Israeli navy gunboats opened heavy machinegun fire at Palestinian fishing boats while at sea off the coast of Khan Younis and Rafah to the south of Gaza Strip on Saturday night.
Source in the marine police told the PIC reporter that the gunboats also fired a number of projectiles at the fishing boats.
They said that the fishermen returned to shore to avoid the shooting, adding that no casualties were reported.
The attack fell in line with the constant targeting of those fishermen despite working in the limited area allowed for them to fish in Gaza waters.
